Present to Desired State
Imagine you’ve just arrived in Melbourne on a plane. You are waiting in the taxi rank at Tullamarine Airport and finally a taxi is in front of you. You get in and the driver says, ‘Where to?’ What do you say?
What would happen if you said, ‘I don’t want to go to Bendigo, I don’t want to go to Brunswick, and I know I don’t want to go to Brighton’? What does the taxi driver do? Nothing. She has no idea where to take you.
Is your career like this? You have a good idea where you don’t want to go, or what you don’t want to do, but you are unclear of where you do want to go.
Working with your present state (where you are now) and determining what you desired state is (where you want to get to) is called ‘P to D’.
Understanding your present state is just as important as knowing your desired state. It’s like discovering where the ‘x’ is on a treasure map and trying to work out how to get to it. To find the ‘x’, obviously you have to work out where the ‘you are here’ mark is as well.
Often the most difficult part of planning ahead is working out what it is you want to achieve. Once you know what your desired state is, then it is just a process of working out the steps to get there, or what is preventing you from getting there.
Once you have a good idea what your desired state looks like, you have to determine the purpose (why you want to achieve it), develop the commitment, and build the belief to get there.
This is why I love the applications of NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) – all the tools are there to assist you to identify your present state and move to your desired state.
